Kosmix is a universal search engine that pulls its data from a variety of sources that includes Wikipedia, Flickr, Yahoo! Answers, Amazon, YouTube and a variety of others. Previously, Kosmix was a vertical search engine for health, automobiles and travel, but has evolved into a universal search engine for all subjects.
According to TechCrunch, Kosmix has closed a $20 million investment round from existing investors Time Warner, Accel Partners, Dag Ventures, and Lightspeed Partners. The $20 million investment brings their total funding up to $55 million.
Additionally, Kosmix announced that former Motorola Chairman and CEO, Ed Zander, will be joining as a private investor and advisor. Ed joins Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Legg Mason’s Bill Miller as private investors.
This was the first time that I had the opportunity to play around with Kosmix, and I really liked what I saw. Their search engine is truly universal as it incorporates all of the top online resources into one giant hub. I also like the way their homepage is setup, displaying all of the top stories in the social realm.
Have any of you ever tried out Kosmix? Thoughts?
